Well written Ashley. I've always marveled that promotion was heavily dependent, not on the popularity of a book - but for a new author - the extortion of cash from the publisher. What amazed me is that it doesn't come with a guarantee.

Since the same big-box publishers also use clout to determine covers and titles for acquired manuscripts, one wonders why they don't cut out the middle-man and just become publishers themselves?

As always, you give me much to think about! Cheers....C

Thanks for an informative and horrifying article on bookstore practices. It's no wonder that it's increasingly difficult to sell books. Is there a way to reverse this trend?
